The City of Downey offers various volunteer opportunities throughout the year within different City departments. Help make a difference by volunteering for Keep Downey Beautiful clean-ups, special city events, the Downey City Library, Columbia Memorial Space Center, City Hall, and so much more! Through its volunteer opportunities, the City aims at providing community members with rewarding experience and promoting civic engagement.
Downey City Library
Share your love of books: become a Library volunteer! Interested The Library needs volunteers who are 18 years or older to work two or more hours per week in one of the following areas: Adults Literacy Program, Book Processing, and Friends of the Library store. To inquire about available openings, call 562-904-7360 ext. 130. Volunteers under age 18, please contact Parks & Recreation and tell them you want to become a Library volunteer!
Parks & Recreation Department
Volunteer opportunities are available for youth in middle school, high school, and adults. Parks & Recreation volunteers will get the opportunity to participate at the local park programs, summer day camps, ASPIRE After School Program, special events and City Hall departments. Help Keep Downey Beautiful by volunteering for monthly clean-ups every 3rd Saturday of the month. Clean-ups are held at different locations throughout the City from 9am-10am, and there is no need to register. Click here to view upcoming locations for clean-ups. Columbia Memorial Space Center
If you love learning and teaching others about Space and Space Science, have a passion for science, technology, engineering, or mathematics, you can be a part of our volunteer program. As a volunteer you would assist in classes, field trips, camps, special events and in the daily interaction with patrons visiting the center from the community. Questions? Downey Police Department
The Downey Police Explorer Program provides an avenue for local high school students to contribute to the community in a meaningful way. Participants work under the close supervision of Downey Police Officers and assist with DUI checkpoints, fingerprinting, and community events. The Downey Fire Department Explorer Post # 641 is a program designed for young adults from ages 16 to 21 years of age who are interested in learning about a career in the Fire Service. The Department also offers an Auxiliary Firefighter program with the goal of allowing fire academy graduates an opportunity to acquire on-the-job training and experience.
