  • The City of Downey Planning Division is devoted to the continuation of providing good service, and to work with the citizen and businesses in our community in a friendly and helpful manner.

    You will find a variety of information relating to on-going developments in the City; future projects coming to the City; and various pieces of information reflecting the profile of the community, such as, Income Per Capita, Age of Population and Ethnicity, Census Information, etc. You will also find how the City’s future has been planned to continue to promote the community’s balance and orderly development.

    We will also provide from time to time, updates on certain major projects of public interest, such as, industrial business parks and/or commercial centers. Updated information on General Plan amendments or zoning amendments will also become available.

    Also available are the various Planning Division documents and forms you may need to file for the processing of various projects. In addition, various informational documents will also be available such as, demographic information, zoning brochures, signing information, etc.

    Planning Commission

    Purpose: The Planning Commission is responsible for making recommendations to the City Council on matters relating to the adoption, amendment or repeal of the City’s General Plan, Specific/Precise Plans, Zoning Ordinances, and Zoning Classifications. It is also responsible for final decisions on land use, such as sub-divisions, Conditional Use Permits, and Variances.

    Number of Members: 5

    Meeting Information: The Planning Commission meets the first and third Wednesday of each month, at 7:30 p.m., in the City Council Chamber of City Hall.

    Appointed by: City Council
    Members: With the new charter amendment governing terms of commissions, their terms will run concurrently with the term of the council member making the appointment.



    Design Review

    Purpose: Design Review is responsible for the physical design and development of both public and private projects in the City promoting responsible design with regard to appearance, signing, and landscaping.
