The City of Downey purchased the approximately 160-acre former NASA Industrial Plant site from the US Government in the late 1990's and early 2000's. After creating a unique financial structure to facilate environmental cleanup at the site, the City entered into a partnership to dispose of the City land for development of a new commercial retail center on the northern portion of the site. Named the Downey Landing, this project was designed and developed in close integration with the ongoing environmental remediation at the site. Downey Landing created an approximately 375,000 commercial center anchored by Best Buy, Staples, and Old Navy. Downey Landing also boasts several high-quality restaraunts and gives Downey residents many new retail and restaurant choices. The Downey Landing project opened in 2006 and continues to provide the City of Downey with important sales tax revenues that fund City services. Additionallly, the Downey Landing property was recently sold and the City of Downey received a profit-particiapation payment that was used for the creation of the nearby Columbia Learning Center and Discovery Park Complex, the first new park in the City of Downey in approximately 30 years.
