    Mayor Luis Marquez’s humble beginnings and family values of hard work, civic responsibility and community service led him to a career in public service.  First elected to the Downey City Council in November 2008, Mayor Marquez was re-elected to a second term in November 2012 based upon on his reputation for helping government deliver for the needs of the people it serves.

    Luis’ results-driven leadership skills have been honed over a seventeen-year career in the public, nonprofit and private sectors. His experience in the state Senate and Assembly have given him expertise in legislative, transportation, water, environmental, economic development and educational matters. He is also a small business owner with a keen understanding of the needs of local families and businesses.

    Born in Villanueva, Zacatecas, Mexico, Mayor Marquez, like many Americans, immigrated to the United States at the age of four. He grew up in a tough South Central Los Angeles neighborhood, but the strong support from his parents and teachers kept him focused. Mayor Marquez attended California State University, Northridge, as a Chicano Studies and Film Production major.

    Mayor Marquez’s strong commitment to residents and businesses, to public safety and quality of life, and to smart economic development are a few of the reasons the City of Downey continues to be one of the most economically vibrant and safest cities in the state.
