Luis H. Marquez of District 1
Luis H. Marquez

Luis Marquez is known for his experience in government and his commitment to his community and public service. In November 2008, Luis was overwhelmingly elected to the Downey City Council with over 16,400 Downey citizens casting their votes for him. Luis' goal is to work closely with Downey residents to make public safety and quality of life issues the top priorities for our city and to support smart economic development that is beneficial to the community and will maintain Downey as a safe and vibrant place to live and raise families.

Luis Marquez was bornĀ in Villanueva, Zacatecas, Mexico. In 1976, Luis' parents Manuel and Maria Marquez made a courageous life changing decision to move their family to the United States to give their children a better life. Luis grew up in the tough Florence-Firestone neighborhood of South Central Los Angeles, where his parents instilled in him at an early age the importance of education, community service and knowing right from wrong. His parents' constant support kept him, his brother and sisters from getting involved in neighborhood gangs and staying out of trouble. Luis' participation in sports, school activities and strong parent and teacher involvement kept him focused. Upon graduation from John C. Fremont High School in South Los Angeles, Luis attended Cal State University, Northridge where he majored in Chicano Studies and Film Production.

Shortly after his marriage in 2001, Luis and his wife Alma chose the wonderful City of Downey as the place to settle down and raise a family. They purchased their home in Downey because of its great reputation as a safe place to live and raise a family. It has its own police and fire departments, a great school district and safe and clean parks. Luis has a vested interest in Downey to ensure that the city maintains its great friendly character of being a safe place to live and raise his twins Diego and Maya.

Luis' humble beginnings and family values of hard work and community service, led him to a career in public service. Luis has over a decade of experience working in the public and private sectors with federal, state, and local governments and with community and educational organizations on a variety of issues that range from transportation to economic development to educational issues. Throughout his career, Luis has demonstrated leadership by handling complex issues and reaching solutions.

Currently, Luis serves as Senior District Deputy for State Senator Alan Lowenthal. In this capacity, Luis functions as the Senator's senior advisor and liaison to his cities, school districts, regional, community and educational organizations. Luis works closely with these entities to serve and address their legislative needs and priorities.

Luis is proud to reside and be part of the wonderful City of Downey with his wife Alma and their beautiful twins Diego and Maya.
