Alex Saab was first elected to the Downey City Council in November 2012 and re-elected in 2016, having received the highest number of votes in the history of the City (24,141 votes and almost 82%). Alex served as Mayor of Downey for 2015-16. Raised in Downey, Alex is a product of local schools. An alumnus of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Downey and St. John Bosco High School, where he played basketball and water polo. Alex began his career working as a substitute teacher for Downey Unified School District. He graduated from U.C. Irvine and earned a Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree from Loyola Law School. During law school, Alex clerked with the United States Attorney’s Office, the U.S. Department of Justice, and the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office.
Alex feels an obligation to serve the community which helped raised him and has chosen to contribute and serve in any way possible. He is proud to serve on many community organizations dedicated to making Downey and the surrounding areas a better place for everyone. He served as President-Elect of the Downey Chamber of Commerce and Vice President of the Southeast District Bar Association. A member of the Legislative Committee and former Chairperson of the City Affairs Committee of the Downey Chamber of Commerce, he has worked closely with the Downey business community over the years. In 2010, his law practice was recognized as Downey’s Small Business of the Year. He is an active member of the Downey Association of Realtors, serving on the Professional Standards/Ethics Committee and the Grievance Committee which ensures ethical compliance of Realtors.
Alex opened his law practice in 2002 and commits a portion of his business to doing Pro-Bono legal work assisting underserved people in the community. He has received numerous recognitions from members of the U.S. Congress, County of Los Angeles, City of Downey, City of Santa Fe Springs and other local government entities for his extensive volunteer and community service. He was recognized as a 2010 Outstanding Community Volunteer by the Downey Coordinating Council. He regularly volunteers with numerous organizations to provide free legal consultation for senior citizens. Alex is the former President of the Downey Los Amigos Kiwanis Club, which assists the children of Downey through service, fundraising and scholarships and currently serves on its Board of Directors. He also serves on the TLC Board of advisers, which serves underprivileged children in Downey Unified School District. He also proudly serves on the St. John Bosco High School Board of Directors.
During his tenure on the Downey City Council, Alex serves as Chairperson of the Southeast Water Area Coalition (SEWAC) representing the citizens of Downey in regional water issues. He also serves on various committees including the Columbia Space Memorial Space Center, the Finance/Budget Committee, Rio Hondo Golf Club, Gangs out of Downey (GOOD), the Downey Police and Fire Foundation, and the Downey Theatre Subcommittee among others. He also serves on the Downtown subcommittee and the branding committee. Alex was instrumental in Downey’s participation in the 2015 World Special Olympics.
Alex is married to Giovanna “Giggy” Saab and together have three children, Dominic (9), Gianna (4) and Alexander (2).
