School Safety Police
Since 1998, the City of Downey Police Department and the Downey Unified School District have joined together to provide for daily police presence at Downey, Warren, and Columbus High Schools, respectively. Campus officers act as a deterrent to crime and truancy taking enforcement or counseling action as appropriate. They provide one-on-one counseling with identified "at risk" students, make threat assessments, share information with school administrators regarding school crime & community issues, participate in conflict resolution, and patrol the campus and adjacent areas.

The School Safety Police Program has been a "team effort" benefiting from enormous community support. The City of Downey, Downey Unified School District, and GOOD (Gangs Out Of Downey) have worked together to ensure that funding for this valuable partnership continues, and its efforts toward maintaining safe, secure, and peaceful school campuses persists.
