The Downey Fire Department participated in a multi-agency training seminar presented by Dr. Steven Chin. The presentation, hosted at the Long Beach Fire Department Headquarters, was simultaneously broadcasted at Downey Fire Headquarters using “Smart Classroom” technology. This “Smart Classroom” technology, available at Downey Fire Headquarters, is a type of tele-education that utilizes real-time interactive virtual classrooms allowing instructors and students in different locations to participate in the class synchronously. The program’s topic was the experiences and lessons learned by the Los Angeles County Fire Department Urban Search & Rescue (USAR) Team CA TF-2 deployment to Haiti to aid in rescuing trapped persons after the January 12, 2010 7.0 magnitude earthquake. Dr. Chin, Medical Team Manager for the USAR Task Force, presented the latest protocols and field treatment in crush injuries. This program allowed Downey Fire Department Paramedics and EMTs to maintain their Continuing Education requirements.
