Traffic Accident with Persons Trapped - Lakewood Blvd.

On December 5, 2010, at 00:49 hours, Downey Engines 63, 61, Truck 611, USAR 661, Squad 642 with assistance from Santa Fe Springs Paramedic Engine 84 under the command of Battalion 604 (Battalion Chief English) responded to Lakewood Boulevard south of Florence Avenue for a reported motor vehicle accident.  A Downey Police Officer was responding to an emergency when his car struck a light pole and overturned coming to rest on its driver’s side entrapping the officer.  The vehicle had sustained extensive damage requiring Downey Fire to perform a complex technical rescue using hydraulic power tools to cut the roof and remove sections of the car to free the officer.  The rescue effort took approximately 50 minutes to free the officer.  He was treated for extensive traumatic injuries by Downey Fire Paramedics and transported to St. Francis Trauma-Medical Center for further evaluation.
