On December 5, 2010 the Compton Fire Department lost Captain Javier Lopez who passed away at his home from a heart attack; he was 45 years old. Captain Lopez began his career with the Compton Fire Department in 1986 as a firefighter advancing to the rank of Captain. Many of us at the Downey Fire Department have had the pleasure of knowing and working with Javier over the years. On Monday, December 13th, Javier was laid to rest at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, accompanied by a large procession of fire and police department personnel from throughout the region. Downey Fire personnel lined bridges over the 105 Freeway to salute the procession as it passed, while others attended the memorial service. Downey Engine 61 and Paramedic Squad 643 moved up into the City of Compton for station coverage as to allow Compton Fire personnel to attend Javier’s funeral. Our thoughts and prayers go out to our bothers and sisters of the Compton Fire Department and to Javier’s friends and family.
