In 2009, the Downey City Council was proud to introduce the Military Banner program to express support and appreciation for Downey residents who are active in the U.S. Military. Through generous donations from local sponsors, 89 banners have been installed and are on display throughout the City. Each banner lists the honoree’s name and branch of service. The banners are located on Downey Ave, between Firestone Blvd. and 6th Street and along on Firestone Blvd. in the Downtown area. “Our City is proud to honor Downey residents that are serving our country. The purchase of the banners would not be possible without the support from generous sponsors, which include local businesses, organizations, residents, and family members of those individuals honored,” said Mayor Luis Marquez.
