Traffic Collision with Sheared Fire Hydrant – Lakewood & Cecilia

On Tuesday, September 13, 2011 at 13:54 hours, Downey Engines 64, 63, 61 with USAR 661, Truck 611, Squad 642 under the command of 604 (Battalion Chief Seely) responded to the intersection of Lakewood Boulevard and Cecilia for a reported single vehicle traffic collision which resulted in a sheared fire hydrant.  The geyser caused by the sheared hydrant resulted in a large quantity of water accumulating on the roof of an adjacent multi-unit apartment complex.  The water accumulated faster than the drains could handle and resulted in water damaged to several apartment units.  While Downey Public Works shut off the hydrant, Downey Fire personnel conducted salvage operations to protect the apartment units’ contents.  Downey Fire Paramedics rendered medical care to the injured driver who was transported to Downey Regional Medical Center for further evaluation.
