During the week of October 3rd, Downey Fire crews participated in live fire and US&R training at the former Gallatin Medical offices located at 10720 Paramount Blvd. The medical office buildings, slated for demolition, were graciously offered to Downey Fire by the property owner, Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital, for the training event. The live fire training allowed firefighters to observe actual fire behavior.
US&R teams from Downey and the neighboring communities were able to practice building searches and shoring. Downey Fire is part of the California Regional Urban Search & Rescue Task Force 2. As a Task Force member, Downey Fire is capable of an immediate response to major US&R incidents such as earthquakes.
Fire Inspector-Investigator Jason Patao coordinated a live fire burn for Arson investigators from throughout the region. With Los Angeles City Fire Department’s Arson Unit and the ATF assisting, a live burn was conducted to study fire behavior, spread, and arson indicators.
