If you are wondering about an unfamiliar tax bill that arrived by mail this week, please rest assured that it is indeed a real bill. You are receiving this bill now because in tax year 2011, a computer glitch prevented the L.A. County Assessors Office from collecting two fees that are normally included in residents’ property tax bill.
In response, the City of Downey sent out invoices to collect the unpaid fees, which cover the City’s lighting and landscaping assessments. The fees could total about $26.
The City has also sent out a letter along with two sample tax forms to explain the reason’s for the separate bill. However it appears that the sample bills have caused some confusion.
To be clear, the copies of property tax bills for 2010 and 2011 tax years were just SAMPLES and not actual bills. Residents should refer to the separate invoice to find out how much they owe.
If you have any questions, please contact the City’s Public Works Department at 562-904-7109.
