Routine Maintenance Reveals Additional Repairs Needed on the Heavily-Travelled Bridge. Los Angeles County bridge engineers working on the San Gabriel River – Firestone Boulevard Bridge maintenance project have placed a 20-ton maximum load limit on traffic crossing the bridge while additional repairs are performed.
Cargo traffic and heavy vehicles needing to cross the San Gabriel River or access the I-605 Freeway from the City of Downey should use Florence Avenue to the north or Imperial Highway to the south in lieu of Firestone Boulevard. The weight limit restriction is expected to remain in effect until 2014.
Firestone Boulevard is a designated truck route within the City of Downey and the heavily travelled bridge provides access to and from the I-605 Freeway. The reduced vehicle weight limit will have a significant impact on the use of Firestone Boulevard by large commercial trucks, as the legal weight for an eighteen-wheeler is 40 tons.
City of Downey Public Works Staff have started notifying area businesses of the new weight restriction. Changeable message signs will notify truckers and motorists well in advance of the bridge and 20-ton weight limit street signs will be installed this week.
Questions regarding alternative routes should be directed to Ed Norris or Brian Ragland of Downey’s Public Works Department at (562) 904-7102. Repair-related questions should be directed to Bob Spencer of the Los Angeles County Public Works Department at (626) 458-4070. Additional information will be posted on the City’s website, www.downeyca.org, as it becomes available.
