As a Literacy Volunteer, you will receive intensive tutor training though a series of workshops. The training includes audio-visual presentations, demonstrations, role playing, and learning theory. The Tutor Training will be for 10 hours over a period of several days and will prepare you to teach an adult to read better, one-on-one.
You will be matched with an adult learner and will meet at the library for an hour and a half once a week session. You will determine the day and time you would like to volunteer.
Ongoing support is available through monthly tutor support meetings.
If you believe in the importance of reading and would like to share your knowledge and enthusiasm with a student, then the Downey City Library Adult Literacy Program needs you. Reading together builds friendships and changes lives.
