Dear Residents of Downey,

Welcome to the City of Downey Public Works Department's website. Here you will find valuable information about the services and programs provided by the Public Works Department. Public Works plans, manages, and maintains Downey’s infrastructure, including streets, water, sewer, storm drains, sidewalks, public facilities, the vehicle fleet, parks, and the urban forest. The department includes four divisions: Administration, Engineering, Utilities, and Maintenance Services, serving over 115,000 residents across 12.6 square miles.

Infrastructure Maintained:

  • Water System: 20 wells, 276 miles of mains, 5,448 valves, 23,080 meters, 3 MWD connections, 4 booster stations, and over 17,800 acre‑feet of water annually.
  • Sewer System: 187 miles of mains, 4,250 manholes, 2 lift stations, and 22,300 private lateral connections.
  • Storm Drains: 33 miles of drains, 570 manholes, 710 catch basins, 2 lift stations, and 65 connections.
  • Additional Assets: 210 miles of streets, 112 acres of parks, 244 vehicles, 10 miles of alleys, 15,600 trees, and 5,200 streetlights.
